Description
As a Buildings Engineer within the Buildings & Architecture division, you will lead the delivery of vertical infrastructure projects such as recreation buildings, fire stations, operations centers, libraries, mixed-use sites, and other essential City-owned facilities. You will play a key role in ensuring these facilities are safe, durable, and efficiently operable through engineering expertise in design, construction, and lifecycle management. Primary responsibilities include:
• Lead the design, construction, and handover of capital projects, including new builds, additions, and major renovations.
• Provide structural, civil, and building envelope engineering reviews to confirm design best practices, material selection, constructability, durability, and lifecycle cost efficiency.
• Manage project scope, scheduling, strategy development, and budget oversight to ensure alignment with project goals and delivery timelines.
• Administer contracts to ensure compliance with specifications; review and approve change orders and contract extensions.
• Identify and mitigate project risks using sound engineering judgment and strategic foresight.
• Offer engineering advice for the maintenance, repair, and preservation of existing and proposed buildings and site structures.
• Conduct facility condition assessments and support lifecycle planning, including consultant engagement and quality assurance review.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of engineering design guidelines and standards for City-owned buildings and site structures.
• Provide design guidance to consultants to ensure alignment with project goals, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including financial tracking, risk assessments, and performance evaluations.
• Develop and present reports on key project metrics, risks, and recommendations.
• Conduct regular site visits to existing facilities and active construction projects.
• Facilitate communication and collaboration with internal departments, regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and interest holders.
• Build and sustain strategic relationships with internal and external interested parties to support excellence in capital project delivery.

Requirements

Qualifications
• A related Engineering degree and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. • Experience must include work on a variety of building types across all project phases, including pre-design, design, construction, procurement, and contract administration.
• Demonstrated ability to negotiate terms, conditions, and fees in service agreements is essential, along with the ability to assess complex engineering challenges, identify potential design risks, and resolve technical and operational concerns with innovative solutions.
• Experience in delivering public sector capital projects is considered an asset.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional designations would be considered assets.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and political acumen are essential in this role, along with the ability to build effective relationships with clients, consultants, and colleagues.
• The successful candidate will have strong analytical thinking and judgment, along with the ability to provide technical or professional advice to a variety of audiences.

Salary & Benefits

Level P3E $113,200-$141,500 per annum
