Primary Duties
Position Summary:
The Water/Wastewater Systems Operator will operate and maintain the water distribution and wastewater collection systems in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standard industry practices. They will carry out maintenance and inspection activities on these systems to ensure the delivery of safe drinking water to customers, the proper collection and conveyance of sewage to treatment facilities and the system’s readiness for fire protection.
Key Responsibilities:
• Act as an Operator in Charge (OIC) as required (Class 3 & 4) and consistent with Ontario Regulation 128/04.
• Ensure equipment is properly monitored and maintained and make operational adjustments as required.
• Identify any environmental hazards after weather events through outfall and shoreline surveys.
• Complete all operational and maintenance activities consistent with applicable laws, regulations, rules, standards and company policies and procedures.
• Ensure third parties have correctly installed and meet regulatory guidelines of piping, valves and meter installation.
• Complete all required documentation consistent with legislative, regulatory, DWQMS requirements and company policies.
• Develop, implement and document traffic control plans to support maintenance activities consistent with OTM Book 7 requirements.
• Evaluate damage and conduct emergency repair of water/wastewater systems due to accidents, malfunctions and weather-related events.
• Review new and amended legislation and assist with the development and implementation of changes to internal policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
• Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Advanced proficiency navigating ARC GIS
• Intermediate knowledge of various Water/Wastewater Regulations, Acts and Standards Work Protection Code and the Drinking Water QMS
• Intermediate proficiency with locator equipment (CCTV & sonar, water service/main correlator)
• Ability to operate various heavy equipment including 0-8 ton crane, backhoe, excavator, tandem dump truck, forklift etc.
• Intermediate proficiency with various hand and power tools
• Intermediate ability to read blueprints, drawings and GIS maps
• Intermediate customer service skills
• Intermediate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
• Basic MS365 skills
Qualifications:
• Experience in water distribution, sanitary collection and storm system utility construction and maintenance planning or Operator in Training (OIT) certification
• Class DZ drivers’ license
Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment
• The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record satisfactory to Utilities Kingston at their own expense.
• A satisfactory MTO Driver’s Check will also be conducted as a condition of employment.
• Obtaining and maintaining a valid DZ driver’s license.
• Obtaining and maintaining Class 1 licenses in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection within 18 months of hire.
• Rotational on-call and the ability to work overtime as required.
• Rotational shift work schedule required.
Salary: $30.33 - $42.62/Hour
