OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Equipment Operator is responsible for performing day-to-day operations of the roads department, including road and equipment maintenance, operation of various equipment, and manual labour. Adherence to safety protocols, legislation, and municipal policies is a critical component of this role.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely operate various heavy machinery, including single or tandem trucks equipped with attachments such as salt and sand spreaders, along with snowplow equipment for efficient road maintenance.
- Utilize 4-wheel drive front-end loaders, motor graders, tractors with attachments such as mowers and front-mounted rotary brooms, and posthole augers for diverse construction and maintenance tasks.
- Operate pickup trucks and manage small equipment and hand tools to support a wide range of public works activities, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational guidelines.
- Perform manual labor tasks like maintaining signs, building roads, controlling traffic, cutting trees, maintaining culverts, picking up roadside debris, patching asphalt, and mowing grass.
- Conduct regular inspections, perform minor maintenance on equipment, and report mechanical issues for repair to maintain machinery in optimal working condition.
- Implement road grading, resurfacing, patching, ditching, and culvert installations during routine operations, as well as engage in snow removal and de-icing operations during winter months.
- Adhere to safety protocols, utilize protective equipment, and ensure compliance with Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards and relevant legislation.
- Maintain detailed records of equipment usage, maintenance activities, and any incidents during operations.
- Assist in setting up and dismantling temporary traffic control measures, supporting other public works projects when needed.
- Respond to public inquiries regarding municipal services, providing accurate information as required.
- Other duties as assigned by Roads Foreman
- Completion of a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement in good standing.
- Minimum of three years’ equipment operator experience, preferably in a municipal environment.
- Courses in T.J Mahony Road School and/or C.S Anderson Road School preferred.
- Training in Transportation of Dangerous Goods, traffic control certification, chain saw operation, and confined space entry considered assets.
- Solid knowledge of road construction and maintenance, equipment operation, public works best practices, and applicable legislation (Minimum Maintenance Standards, MECP/MTO regulations).
- Working knowledge of all Occupational Health and Safety and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System regulations.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings and work outdoors in various weather conditions and outside regular hours.
- Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract required.
- This position requires a standard 40-hour workweek with availability for evening, night, weekend, holiday shifts, and on-call duties; Overtime may be required as per operational needs.
- Must be capable of reporting to town hall within 45 minutes of a callout.
- The pay range for this position is $67, 635 – $79, 123.
- Physical demands include standing, sitting, and walking on construction sites with a need for visual attention to comply with health and safety regulations. Physical dexterity is necessary for tasks such as bending and minimal lifting.
