Under the direction of the Supervisor, Building Operations, Facility Maintenance & Operations, the Assistant Pool Operator will assist with various indoor and outdoor pool related duties that are required to enable pools to be operated in a safe and efficient manner.
DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in pool maintenance following the guidelines in the" Nova Scotia Operational Guidelines for Aquatic Facilities," current guidelines dated 2014, and the "Pool and Spa Operator Handbook" by the National Swimming Pool Foundations, current edition
- Regular cleaning of pools as required
- Assist in water chemistry balance in indoor and outdoor pools
- Inform the pool operator of all problems or potential problems (ex. high TDS, improper chemical levels, or anything with the potential to affect effective and efficient operation).
- Assist in maintaining pool equipment including pumps, filters, heaters and feeders
- Sweep, back wash and vacuum pools as required
- General care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment and tools.
- Load and unload equipment and materials as required
- Assist in keeping inventory of equipment and chemicals, reagents and other necessary supplies and assist in ordering and receiving necessary supplies for the efficient and effective operation of all pools with direct liaison with the pool operator
- Assist in maintaining all MSDS Sheets for the appropriate chemicals used in pool operations
- Must have good oral and written communication skills
- Must work well with minimum supervision and in team environment
- May perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in a maintenance or pool environment an asset
- WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, and Fall Arrest or ability to successfully complete
- Must have a valid NS Driver’s license, minimum Class 5. (A driver's abstract will be required)
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- General knowledge and ability to work with tools safely
- Communicate with the general public on a regular basis, related to duties performed
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Must demonstrate effectiveness in the following competencies: communication, customer service, teamwork, achievement motivation, concern for order and quality, and diversity
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on task which could include but not limited to: protective clothing, rubber apron, boots, gloves, respirator etc.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and have a good attendance record

WORK STATUS: Permanent, Full-time
HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm 40 hours per week
SALARY: $26.87 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
WORK LOCATION: 375 Cowie Hill Rd Halifax; various HRM pool locations.
