As a member of the Development and Regulatory Services Department’s Building Division team, the Building Inspector Level 1 will be primarily responsible for the processing and issuing of building permits and inspections in accordance with the BC Building Code for buildings up to 600m2 and 3-storeys in building height classified as:
• Group C – Single Family Residential Buildings
• Residential ancillary buildings
The incumbent will be primarily responsible for the following duties in relation to the above:
• Review of proposed building designs, materials, and devices for compliance with related bylaws, regulations, and codes
• Process, accept, or reject proposed building construction plans
• Provide information services to the public on technical, regulatory, and code requirements
• Prepare related correspondence and reports
• Perform Level 1 building inspections
The incumbent will possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to use tact when dealing effectively with developers, contractors, other government agencies and members of the public. The incumbent will be skilled in reading and interpreting building construction plans and drawings; as well as, have relevant knowledge of bylaws, regulations, codes, policies, procedures, and standards. Incumbents will give evidence in Court as required and perform other related tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
• Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
• Must have completed Grade 12;
• Must be qualified to Level 1 in accordance with the Provincial Regulations and Building Officials’ Association of BC
• Must be enrolled in a red seal journeyman carpenter program or in a diploma in Building Technology which must be completed within 3 years of appointment to this class description;
• Must have a minimum of 2 years of related, additional experience;
Incumbents in this class will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday in accordance with the hours specified and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The hourly rate for this unionized position is $45.97 per hour (2025 rate).
