Job Summary:

The Communications Advisor will be responsible for providing guidance and support in the strategy, coordination and implementation of internal and external communications initiatives at the City of Markham. Working closely with senior leadership, directors, business leads, the Communications & Engagement Specialist and the Manager of Corporate Communications, this position will be responsible for developing, overseeing and implementing comprehensive marketing and communications initiatives that align with the City’s goals and objectives and supporting Markham’s strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of the City of Markham’s Corporate Communications team, you will: 

  • Lead communications for various City departments and be responsible for liaising directly with department subject matter experts (SMEs), building communications plans, working with graphic design, media and digital/social media teams to execute projects
  • Provide strategic planning, advice and guidance that align with the Corporation's goals and objectives and protect the City of Markham’s brand
  • Lead complex and integrated marketing and communications campaigns through all phases for major City-produced events, internal/external corporate-wide initiatives and department-led projects
  • Plan and execute comprehensive digital communication campaigns, working closely with our graphic design and digital/social media team
  • Write and prepare content related to events, news items, web content and updates, eNewsletter content, social media, video storyboards, scripts and more
  • This position will work closely with the Communications and Engagement Specialist (within the Corporate Communications department) to identify and build new and existing relationships with local media and digital influencers, particularly in cultural communities
  • This position may also assist with the coordination of media enquiries, briefing notes, draft media responses and preparation of background materials and content for media announcements, as required
  • Work closely with the City’s Special Events team on corporately-supported initiatives and Signature Events to provide marketing and communications support pre-event, day-of and post-event
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

Experience and Education Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a corporate communications, marketing, public affairs or agency environment — providing support, advice and strategic planning to senior organizational leaders, with a strong political acumen
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Proven track record of effective, multi-faceted communications and marketing campaigns with high community engagement
  • A strong ability to build and manage relationships and the ability to establish trust and confidence
  • Expertise in developing and delivering digital content, social media marketing, speech writing and other communications assets  
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and AODA standards is highly preferred
  • Ability to take complex information from multiple sources and present it in understandable format and contextAbility to effectively deal with emerging and complex issues in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated prioritization and organizational skills to ensure products meet deadlines through the approval process.
  • A passion for analyzing data and making data-driven decisions to meet and exceed business goals
  • Must be able to attend meetings, special events and activities outside of regular business hours, including on some weekends and statutory holidays
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment across all levels of the organization
  • Dedicated to customer service excellence with internal and external stakeholders
  • College or university degree in communications, public affairs, or related field of study is preferred
  • Previous work experience in public sector and/or municipal environment is preferred, but not required
  • Fluency in one or more of the following languages is an asset: Mandarin, Cantonese,Tamil

Salary & Benefits

$75,167.00 To $85,358.00 Annually
