Purpose of the position

The purpose of this position is to conduct all lifeguarding and instructional duties. The Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising, providing on-site guidance and direction as well as maintaining control of the activities within the aquatic facility and providing a safe, clean, enjoyable experience for all users.

Core functions of the job include:

  • Lifeguarding and Instructing
  • Preparing scheduling and work assignments for lifeguard team
  • Mentoring and coaching team members
  • Assisting with orientation, training, and development of new and existing staff
  • Supervising and assisting with performance management of staff
  • Assisting with pool operation maintenance and chemical checks
  • Assisting with routine maintenance and daily cleaning of facility
  • Opening and closing facility duties
  • Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety policies and procedures
Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Grade Twelve education or equivalent
  • 18 + years of age
  • Possess a minimum of  3 years related work experience in an aquatic environment
  • Hold a minimum of 1 year experience in a leadership role/supervisory experience
  • Have a Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Certificate (NL) is required
  • Possess a Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED or Aquatic Emergency Care is required
  • Hold a Swim for Life Instructor Certificate is required
  • Possess a Certified Pool Operator Certification is an asset
  • Hold Lifesaving Society Advanced Instructor Certification is required 
  • Aquafit or other aquatic certifications is an asset)
  • Have supervisory or leadership courses (an asset)
  • Have knowledge of Alberta Health Pool Regulations, Employment Standards, and HR administration policies
  • Hold knowledge and/or experience working with booking/recreation software
  • Be energetic along with excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Possess ability to analyze, make decisions, and resolve situations
  • Be willing to work in a busy aquatic environment and be exposed to gases, pool chemicals, cleaning solvents, and other controlled substances.
  • Hold a Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Experience working in municipal government and public recreation facilities is an asset
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays, where

operationally required

  • Subject to satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract
