Do you have a passion for trees? Do you want to help contribute to solving the current housing crisis while also protecting the Urban Forest? The Parks Division is seeking an experienced Parks Development Review Technician to help Saanich deliver its goals and objectives, specifically as they relate to trees and delivering on providing a diversity of housing. This position reviews development applications to ensure they comply with the Urban Forest Strategy and the Tree Protection Bylaw. The ideal candidate is service oriented, can problem solve, has good judgement, can analyze complex information, and possesses strong communication skills. They have experience applying construction techniques that mitigate tree impacts and produce excellent results, both in quality and quantity. They work well both independently and part of larger team.

Requirements

Requirements include: a two-year diploma in arboriculture or horticulture from a recognized university or college; a course in Bylaw compliance, enforcement, and investigative skills by a recognized accredited institution; two years of progressive experience in Urban Forestry and/or administration of a Tree Protection Bylaw; two years of experience reviewing a variety of development proposals and various plans; certificate from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) as a Certified Arborist; ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), and a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence. Experience using development review or design software such as AutoCAD, and/or Bluebeam is an asset. The successful candidate will have strong computer skills and working knowledge of standardized corporate software packages; excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes; and knowledge and experience using development techniques that mitigate tree impacts. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education may be considered.

The successful candidate will work Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 pm. (40 hours a week) with a possibility of a modified work schedule (flex days).  Candidates must have sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina, and coordination to perform work.

Salary & Benefits

This is a C.U.P.E. Local 2011 position with a wage of $44.46 per hour (2024 rate) and an excellent benefits package.
