Description
Parkland County has an opportunity for a temporary, full-time Municipal Energy Specialist position in the Agriculture & Environment Services Department working until approximately December 2026. Reporting to the Manager, Environment Services, the Municipal Energy Specialist is responsible for providing project management and advisement on corporate projects related to energy management to ensure effective strategies are developed and executed to enhance sustainability initiatives. This position is responsible for completing energy assessments and plans, making recommendations for life-cycle improvements and capital projects, and educating staff on energy efficiency measures. The Municipal Energy Specialist will oversee small building upgrades, develop business cases for large retrofits or renewable energy systems, and provide support in project management, procurement, and grant management. This position will also contribute to climate change resiliency and mitigation planning and implementation as required.

Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or Environment related field with a technical focus on climate change and energy management.
  • Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Practitioner in Energy Management Systems (CP EnMS) or similar would be considered assets.
  • 2-4 years of experience with energy systems, processes, principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with systems such as HVAC, lighting, chillers and refrigeration, motors, variable frequency drives, compressed air, building envelope, renewable energy, and process equipment.
  • Proficiency in energy modeling software and ability to use it effectively (e.g., RETScreen, GRITS, Energy Star Portfolio Manager). Knowledge of energy management systems, greenhouse gas inventories, and climate change initiatives. Strong analytical skills to analyze energy performance data and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results on time and within budget.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. 
  • Possession of a valid Alberta driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
Salary & Benefits

The total rewards package for this position includes:

A starting annual salary of $82,300 to $104,200 based on a 35-hour work week and option to join the Earned Day Off Program.
