About You / What We Are Looking For

 

The City of Coquitlam, Urban Forestry Operations Division is currently seeking a Regular Full Time Natural Areas Supervisor. You will be directing and overseeing various forest management and restoration plans, as well as various related reports. You will be supervising the work of a Lead Hand – Forest Management and three Forest Management Technicians, and will be using your independence and judgment to solve complex and contentious problems. If you have a natural resource related background, plus applicable related natural resource experience, combined with the desire and ability to supervise, we look forward to your application!

 

The Natural Areas Supervisor researches best management practices, and reviews and analyzes information in order to implement related forest management initiatives. The Supervisor would work with contractors and consultants on various technical projects relating to forest health, tree risk, trees and development, invasive species, park infrastructure and habitat enhancement. The Supervisor would further respond to public complaints/inquiries relating to invasive species, natural areas and encroachments, and would also maintain effective working relationships with various internal and external contacts for purposes of regional planning processes.   • Supervising and motivating a busy team of technical experts and seasonal labourers.
  • Participating in Park events and activities including Coquitlam in Bloom, Lights at LaFarge and seasonal snow response.
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders on a variety of natural resource related topics

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • The ideal candidate will have a university degree in biology, forestry, urban forestry, ecology, natural resource management or related discipline, plus three years related experience or five years related experience combined with a technical diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The candidate must be eligible for registration with the College of Applied Biology of BC or the Association of BC Forest Professionals. 
  • A Driver’s License for the Province of BC (with satisfactory driving record) is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Preference may be given to applicants certified as an arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, and Qualified Tree Risk Assessors.

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $50.12 - $59.22 (2024 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available.
