About You / What We Are Looking For

 

The City has an opening for a Lead Hand Forest Management in the Urban Forestry & Park Services team in the Parks, Recreation, Culture and Facilities Department.  In this position, you will supervise a crew of temporary full-time labourers engaged in the maintenance and enhancement of forested areas in Coquitlam parks. In addition, you will lead on the implementation of other forest management activities throughout the parks system.

 

Reporting to the Natural Areas Supervisor, the Lead Hand Forest Management will implement a range of forest management activities. These activities will be carried out directly by the Lead Hand Forest Management including invasive plant species management, habitat restoration plantings, community stewardship projects, monitoring and data entry. A small crew of labourers, that the Lead Hand Forest Management will supervise, will aid with these activities.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Sound knowledge of local ecosystems, native and invasive plants species identification and habitat restoration practices. Previous experience supervising a crew is also valuable experience to bring to this position.
  • A degree or diploma in biology, forestry or natural resource management as well as experience with habitat restoration and enhancement.
  • Possess Pesticide Applicator Certification as a requirement of the position, however, candidates without certification may be considered provided they successfully complete this certification during their probationary period at their own expense.
  • A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia (with a satisfactory driving report) is required.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Applicants with municipal experience may be considered preferentially
