Description
The County of Grande Prairie No. 1, part of the Community Services Service Area, is seeking a highly qualified and dedicated individual to join our team as the Deputy Chief of Training for our Fire Services program. This is a critical leadership role within our Regional Fire Service, responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing comprehensive training programs to enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of our firefighting personnel.

As the Deputy Chief of Training, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the readiness and competence of our firefighting personnel. You will work collaboratively with the team to develop and execute training programs that align with our strategic objectives and maintain our operational excellence. Your responsibilities will include organizing training sessions, creating training materials, mentoring new recruits, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines for firefighting.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing revision of Fire Department's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Demonstrate experience working in a composite fire service.
  • Promote Health & Safety programs, setting an example in Health, Wellness, and Work-Life Balance.
  • Support and uphold the traditions that define the fire service.
  • Champion physical fitness for firefighters and actively participate in a regular fitness regime.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with partner fire departments, industry, government agencies, and other County staff.
  • Develop and implement training programs aligned with the department's strategic objectives.
  • Organize and conduct training sessions, evaluate performance, and provide feedback.
  • Create and maintain training materials, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure training content remains current.
  • Maintain accurate training records and generate progress reports.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and incorporate innovative training techniques.
  • Coordinate equipment and facility management for training activities.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance, and supervision to new and less-experienced firefighters.
  • Collaborate with other departments and agencies for joint training exercises and resource sharing.
  • Ensure training activities adhere to safety guidelines, occupational health standards, and legal requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate ongoing training programs for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 15 years of firefighting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • NFPA 1001 Level II
  • NFPA 1021 Level II
  • Certification as a 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level II or ability to achieve within the first year.
  • Strong knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures, and best practices.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programs in the fire service or emergency response field.
  • Familiarity with training technologies and tools.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • ICS 300
  • Current CPR, AED, and medical responder certificates.
  • Valid Class 3-Q license and clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional NFPA certifications and training.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Proficiency in learning management systems.
  • Emergency Operations Center Management experience.
  • Alberta Municipal Affairs NFPA Certification approved Proctor/Evaluator.
