SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Reporting to the Manager of Transportation Services, the Crossing Guard Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the entire Crossing Guard Program, including the recruitment, training, placement, scheduling, and monitoring of staff as well as undertaking or participating in a variety of field reviews and/or studies, and the analysis of data, to ensure the successful operation of the Program in compliance with all provincial guidelines and legislative and corporate regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, establishes, maintains, and prioritizes the work plan in support of the School Crossing Guard Program.
  • Assesses staffing needs and designs and coordinates recruitment process inclusive of advertising campaigns, conducting interviews, and making recommendations regarding selection and replacement of full time and standby crossing guards, and managing ongoing vacancies.
  • Deploys Crossing Guards and assigns shifts to ensure optimal coverage and safety for school-aged children crossing applicable roadways. Supervises daily activities of assigned staff including, training, coaching and performance management in accordance with City policies.
  • Performs on-site assessments of Crossing Guards to ensure compliance with operational procedures and safety protocols. Consults with Transportation Services Staff with respect to conducting relevant studies and analysis to determine where new crossing guards are needed as well as evaluating existing locations for continuation or removal of crossing guards. Assesses pavement markings and signage at school crossings reporting any safety hazards and other potential safety issues to the Transportation Technologist and/or Manager.
  • Responds, addresses, and follows up on concerns and/or complaints about Crossing Guard Program from parents, schools and the public including tardiness, absenteeism, job performance and site conditions.
  • Communicates with and serves as the point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on issues relating to the Crossing Guard Program.
  • Organizes and presents the annual training orientation meeting for new and returning guards.
  • Creates and keeps up to date various operating procedures, training requirements, and requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Utilizes software to input, track and maintain a range of records, including but not limited to Crossing Guard contact information, school and crosswalk locations, timekeeping records, equipment and clothing, and various surveys.
  • Implements applicable health and safety regulations and risk assessments in consultation with HR Specialists and Outside Health and Safety Committee representatives.
  • Administers allocated budget within approved corporate system and provides status updates to the Manager, including providing program cost estimates for preparation of the operating budget.
  • Monitors the inventory, and orders equipment and uniform clothing within approved budget, as required.
  • Other duties as required.
Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a College Diploma in Office Administration, Business, Transportation Technology or related discipline.
  • Current knowledge of applicable legislation, traffic regulations, traffic by-laws and safety procedures related to school crossings, including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Employment Standards Act 2000, Ontario Traffic Manual and Municipal Act.
  • Enhanced ability to deal courteously and professionally with members of the public, staff members and third-party entities by phone, email and in person.
  • Experience in recruitment and selection, training and orientation, and performance management.
  • Strong time management, customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in application of MS Office, especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Possesses a valid Ontario class “G” drivers license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours. 
Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: Minimum $85,831 annually; Maximum $100,409 annually

Expected Work Location: City Hall (eligible for some remote work)

Hours of Work: Currently Monday - Friday; 7:30 am - 3:30 pm
