Description
Position Summary
The Department of Community Services, Facility, Operations & Environment Division is accepting applications for one (1) Seasonal Arborist. Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Operations - Forestry this position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive Town urban forestry program with the Forestry Division and ensuring forestry related service requests are dealt with in a timely manner. This position is responsible for working with crews, other Arborists, seasonal staff and students as required. This position is also responsible for participating in forestry maintenance management programs such as young tree pruning, cyclical urban tree maintenance, tree planting projects and other forestry duties as assigned by Operations Forestry Administration staff.

 

Key Responsibilities
Work with forestry team in the field in implementing projects directly related to all urban forestry activity, such as: treeinsect and disease suppression, tree removal programs, tree pruning programs, tree watering programs, tree riskmitigation, tree stake removals, mulching, brushing, stump grinding, tree planting, and woodlands tree maintenance
Undertake woodlot and street tree management activities
Implement assigned arboriculture work, including pruning and removals according to current policies and proceduresand accepted industry practice(s)
Operate specialized equipment such as: chippers, chain saws, stumper and other forestry related equipment whererequired in a safe and efficient manner
Create and maintain records as required, including but not limited to, Urban Forestry site work safety plans(tailboards), traffic control plans (Book 7) and tree maintenance work records for all projects, daily
This position is subject to overtime shifts to deal with emergency situations from time to time (e.g. tree hazardamelioration, wind storm / ice storm and other such duties)
Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating procedures/guidelines andthe Occupational Health & Safety Act
Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives
Review / inspect both in-house and contractor forestry work as required by the Manager and/or Supervisor
Provide budget recommendations to the Supervisor and / or Manager of Forestry as required

Requirements

Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture or Horticulture from an officially recognizeduniversity or college
Two (2) years of directly related experience including the operation, routine maintenance, and safe use of industryrelated equipment
Versed in Arborist Industry Safe Work Practices Guide Third Edition
One(1) or more of The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certifications as a Certified Arborist, UtilitySpecialist, Municipal Specialist, etc.
Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) would be considered an asset
Chipper and stump grinder training and knowledge
Book 7 traffic control training and knowledge
“DZ” Ontario Driver’s License would be considered an asset
Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and customer service skills
Strong organizational, time management skills and problem solving abilities
Ability to work in all kinds of weather and ability to lift heavy objects such as tree branches, chainsaws, trees forplanting, etc.
Qualified candidates will be required to complete a written and practical test

 

The successful candidate must have clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits.A recent driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required if selected for an interview. Persons with 4 ormore demerit points need not apply.

Salary & Benefits

Hourly Rate: $27.83
