The District of Saanich has been a climate action leader for many years. The Municipal Facilities Division in the Engineering Department is seeking a Sustainable Energy Specialist who will be responsible for the formulation, implementation and ongoing management of key corporate and community-wide energy policies, projects and programs that promote and work towards long-term sustainability and achievement of the District of Saanich greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets from the award-winning Saanich Climate Plan.

The successful candidate will provide research, analysis, technical expertise, advice and guidance to Council and senior staff, Municipal departments, community groups and the public on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and greenhouse gas reduction strategies including emerging technologies. In addition, the Sustainable Energy Specialist will coordinate contractors/consultants and related budgets, and successfully implement energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, with a focus on high performance buildings.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week) with a possibility of flex days and a modified work schedule. Occasional work from home is available depending on work assignments.

Requirements

Qualified candidates have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in sustainability, planning, engineering, resource management or a related business field;
  • One of the following:
  • Graduate degree in business, planning, engineering, public policy, sustainability, resource management or a related business field;
  • Certified Energy Manager designation under the Canadian Institute of Energy Training;
  • Sustainable Energy Management credentials such as: BCIT SEMAC (Sustainable Energy Management Association Certificate);
  • UBC Masters in Clean Energy; and
  • Six years of relevant experience in planning and implementing energy management, renewable energy and/or sustainability projects and initiatives.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Candidates should also have professional knowledge and diverse experience, such as in project management, supervision of contractors/consultants, preparing and managing project budgets, public engagement, policy development, and securing grant funding; working knowledge of green building certifications; demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams in the delivery of multiple projects simultaneously ensuring strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders; and excellent leadership and project management skills.

Salary & Benefits

This is a CUPE Local 2011 position with a wage of $52.26 per hour and an excellent benefits package.
