Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Strategy and Architecture, the Solutions Architect is accountable to define technology and solution architectures that align with the City's Business and IT Strategies. This position ensures that new, upgraded or replacement technology investments are designed to align to the defined and approved architectures. This role will provide mentorship and establish information technology architectural best practices for the City and the IT team, and is responsible to guide all work related to technical/business solutions at the City.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with business leaders to understand business requirements and help them understand how technology trade-offs influence strategy
  • Leading the instantiation of IT architectural principles while planning, scheduling and ensuring the effectiveness of the ARB.  This requires leading a group of Senior Analysts and Architects as well as key business stakeholders around collaborative planning, concepts, and applying the correct templates, analysis and frameworks to specific business or technical problems
  • Develop and maintain all artifacts related to the City's enterprise architecture and develop to- be architectures for proposed technology investments ensuring alignment with business and technology strategies.
  • Consults with application or infrastructure development projects to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture, and accountable for delivery of all solution architectures for all IT related projects
  • Architect enterprise level application solutions including designing user interfaces, application interfaces (API), application components, databases, systems integration and application infrastructure
  • Lead and approve the work of contracted Architects and vendors providing solutions.  
  • Provide mentorship and establish architectural best practices to the IT team and grow and develop Analysts on architectural concepts in both project and daily operational work
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Microsoft Azure, TOGAF or ITIL certifications 
  • 7 years of experience in architectural roles with a strong understanding of application architecture, infrastructure, data and security
  • 7 years of experience in delivering technology solutions across products, services, projects and systems

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Experience with leading programs and projects involving the integration of different types of technologies and platforms
  • Hands on experience in producing architectural artefacts at conceptual, logical and physical levels
  • Experience working with cloud technologies and deploying solutions in the cloud (Azure, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience with designing solutions with complex integration requirements
  • Experience in working with multi-stakeholder solutions
  • Knowledge of architecture domains, including business, application, infrastructure, data and security
  • Experience with Enterprise Architecture frameworks (TOGAF and/or Zachman)
  • Ability to distill complex technical solutions 
  • Passion for learning, using and explaining new technology
  • A team player that will help mentor teammates on architecture concepts
  • Strong customer service orientation with experience acting as the prime technical resource when liaising with vendors and business users
  • Excellent problem solving, facilitation, interpersonal, and leadership skills capable of mobilizing the project team to deliver solutions that fit customer needs
