This posting is for two positions: Outdoor Instructor I and Outdoor Instructor II.

We are seeking up to 7 Outdoor Instructors.

These positions are seasonal, starting in May with an expected end date of August 31, 2024.

The Outdoor Instructor I position is based out of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. This position will be responsible for supporting the Outdoor Instructor II with planning and delivering high-quality outdoor recreation and environmental education programs, day camps, overnight day camps, and events for the community. General responsibilities will include participation in training programs for the sharing of information and/or improving skills and knowledge while maintaining a safe environment.
 

The Outdoor Instructor II position is based out of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. This position is responsible for coordinating, planning, leading and evaluating high quality outdoor recreation and environmental education programs, camps and events for the public, schools and community groups. General responsibilities will include training and mentorship of staff, program development, as well as ensuring a safe environment for participants by following OHS polices, practices, guidelines, and procedures.  

Responsibilities

Instructor I

  • Support the Lead Instructor with the planning, leading, and delivery of programs, camps, and events to the general public, schools, and community groups.
  • Work as a team member to support the development of detailed activities and schedules that are creative, effective, and flexible. 
  • Support the Lead Instructor with managing forms, documents, and communications to parents/guardians.
  • Support the learning of participants and peer team members by adapting teaching styles and modeling appropriate behaviours to provide a positive environment for lifelong learning. Assist with the assessment of participants and provision of opportunities for individual developmental.
  • Greet and welcome each program participant & guest, ensuring the guest experience is treated with respect and value.
  • Provide daily feedback and communicate any incidents that occurred in the program, event, or camp to a supervisor

Instructor II (Lead Instructor)

  • Work as a team leader to ensure the creative and effective planning and delivery of all outdoor programs, camps and events 
  • Manage all forms, documents and communications to parents/guardians and leaders of school and community group programs, camps, event participants 
  • Ensure pertinent information, issues, or concerns is communicated to camp staff team, the Assistant Recreation Programmer and/or the Recreation Programmer 
  • Evaluate programs to ensure program objectives are being met and are appropriate for the clientele. Communicate with Outdoor Recreation Programmer regarding suggestions for changes to program objectives, or program delivery when required. 
  • Create a safe environment for participants through regular inspections. Follow the safety and OHS policies, practices, guidelines and procedures for outdoor programs at the appropriate facilities/sites. 
  • Ensure program areas and equipment are maintained including: general maintenance and cleaning of equipment; reviewing and maintaining inventories; set-up and clean-up program areas; and maintain and submit logbooks for vehicles and equipment. 
Requirements

Skills and Qualifications

  • Positive and professional attitude with strong communication skills working with diverse groups of individuals including participants, parents/guardians, teachers, group leaders, adult participants, and staff.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a constantly changing environment including providing support and lead staff/contractors/volunteers/youth leaders and coaching to program participants and to involve them in decision making. 
  • Ability to incorporate environmental stewardship and physical literacy in all programs, events and camps. 
  • Ability to deal with a variety of participant needs and to plan events, programs and camps appropriately. 
  • Effective planning & project execution 
  • In the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Tourism, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • *Minimum 2 years of experience in outdoor skills, adventure education, and/or environmental education program planning and delivery *for Outdoor Instructor II position
  • Demonstrated proven and logged experience working with youth, sports or outdoor skills, and/or environmental education program planning and delivery
  • Current and Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR ‘C’
  • Maintain program area technical qualification/certifications specific to the seasonal programs delivered. These may include:
    • Year-round:  minimum 40-hour Wilderness Advanced First Aid, (WAFA), CPR Level C
    • Spring/Fall: Paddle Canada (PC) Waterfront Instructor
  • The following certifications are an asset to the position:
    • 40 or 80 hour Wilderness First Aid
    • Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor Tandem, Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor Solo; Swift Water Rescue training
    • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development
    • WHMIS

Conditions of Employment

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits 
Salary & Benefits

Pay Range: $19.37 - $31.84/hour
