The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting to fill the permanent full-time position of Senior Utilities Superintendent for our Utilities department.  The Senior Utilities Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of The City’s Electric Utility operations while providing effective leadership, direction, and development for all aspects of the business. They will ensure established goals are met for the safety of staff and the public, the provision of quality customer service, and compliance with industry regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. The Senior Superintendent demonstrates appropriate stewardship of all section resources and will work closely with senior management and organizational supports in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of budgetary and resource allocation plans. Developing effective, collaborative relationships with a broad range of parties across the organization, the community, the utility industry, and various orders of government is a priority for this key member of the utilities leadership team.

Requirements

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • University Degree in relevant leadership or technical field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • 8 – 10 years of varied, progressive management / supervisory experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • In addition to the 9 Core Competencies, the following are specific to this position:
    • Knowledge of municipal government utility operations is considered an asset.
    • Electrical distribution utility engineering experience is considered an asset.
    • Knowledge of economics, basic accounting principles and the techniques of budget preparation and utility financial models.
    • Well-developed interpersonal skills to effectively interact with internal staff as well as with other industry stakeholders, regulatory boards, provincial government, and elected officials.
    • Excellent communications skills to function appropriately with field staff, technical personnel, senior management, external stakeholders, and elected officials.
    • Ability to make sound judgments, gather information from a variety of sources and articulate findings effectively in oral and print formats.
    • Demonstrated commitment to training, mentoring, coaching and team building.
    • Collaborative problem solving and issues resolution.
    • Excellent analysis, assessment, and decision-making skills.
    • Ability to obtain thorough knowledge of Alberta Electric Utility Codes and Regulations
    • Knowledge of project management practices and principles would be beneficial.
    • A valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle License with an acceptable driving record.
