JOB SUMMARY

To review plans, specifications, calculations and other design data submitted with building permit application to confirm that proposed design confirms to the Ontario Building Code and other applicable laws with respect to public health and safety, fire protection, structural sufficiency, conservation, environmental integrity and barrier free design.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To review architectural drawings and coordinate with other disciplines to ensure that building designs submitted with building permit applications comply with the public health and safety, fire protection, conservation, environmental integrity and barrier-free design requirements of Parts 3,5,9,10,11 and 12 of Division B of the Ontario Building Code and any referenced standards.
  • To review structural drawings to ensure that building designs submitted with building permit application comply with the structural sufficiency requirements of part 4 of Division B of the Ontario Building Code and any referenced standards.
  • To review alternative solution proposals and make recommendations for approval or denial to the Manager of Plans Review, Manager of Inspections and/or Chief Building Official.
  • To evaluate design proposals of buildings of all levels of complexity submitted through general inquires and preliminary submission and advise clients on the conformity of such with the applicable requirements of the Ontario Building Code.
  • To provide leadership and assist the Manager of Plans Review, Manager of Inspections and Chief Building Official in the establishment of departmental standard practices and policies.
  • To conduct on-site inspections as required and provide expert opinions on engineering principles and building code related to structural sufficiency.
  • To represent the Building Standards Department and City of Markham on technical committees and/or provincial task groups to provide technical advice and practical input on matters of building code requirements, procedures and implementation.
  • To serve as an expert witness in court proceeding where necessary.
  • To verify permit values in accordance with the City of Markham Building By-Law.
  • To verify floor area values and dwelling unit counts in accordance with procedures and development charges by-laws.
  • Other special projects as assigned
Requirements

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Member of Professional Engineers Ontario [PEO]
  • Minimum five [5] years’ experience as a fully qualified professional Engineer in the design, review and/or construction of buildings obtained in a consulting and/or regulatory environment with particular emphasis on fire protection and health related matters and structural sufficiency
  • Qualified under the Building Code Act and Ontario Building Code in the following categories: Small Buildings, Complex Buildings, Building Structural and Detection, Lighting & Power or Building Services
