The Development Department, Engineering Division is accepting applications to fill one (1) full-time contract Traffic Technician position. Reporting to the Manager, Traffic, this position is responsible for addressing road safety concerns and operational issues related to traffic, parking, and construction through investigation, analysis, and implementation of traffic initiatives.
Major Job Responsibilities
Undertakes field investigations related to traffic operations, parking, traffic control signals, pavement markings and road construction
- Conducts site inspections for traffic safety and operational concerns from the public and council, sign deficiencies, and traffic control signal operational issues and makes recommendations for improvements
- Administers automated traffic recorder program (ATR) for Traffic Calming requests
- Analyzes data to determine if traffic calming devices are warranted on a road segments in accordance with the towns Traffic Calming Policy
- Assists Road Safety Specialist with preparation of Traffic Calming Packages, Public Information Centres etc.
- Oversees work by contractor for the installation of temporary traffic calming devices;
- Conducts studies once temporary traffic calming devise are installed to determine their effectiveness
- Conducts traffic studies to determine if all-way stops, pedestrian crossovers and traffic signals are warranted
- Reviews Traffic Control Plans for road works to ensure they align with OTM Book 7 Guidelines
- Assists with annual pavement marking program including updating GIS database and inspecting work by outside contractor
- Assists with annual sign inventory and retro reflectivity program
- Assists with permits for Oversize Load, Road Occupancy, Filming, Special Events, Banners and Street Parties
- Assists with ensuring all electrical traffic equipment (Driver Feedback Board, Radar Units, School Zone Flashers) are in working order and trouble shoots with vendors when necessary
- Determines need for new traffic control devices on municipal roadways through data analysis
- Analyzes traffic data and conducts warrants through Traffic Engineering Software ensuring they meet industry standards
- Maintains the Traffic Engineering Database (TES) to ensure all traffic study and collision data is up to date
- Recommends implementation of all-way stops, signals and pedestrian crossovers;
- Authors written correspondence and reports to Committee, Council, and the general public related to traffic engineering including preparation of technical recommendations
- Prepare reports and by-law amendments for approval by Manager, Traffic; and,
- Corresponds with outside agencies (Halton Regional Police, School Boards) related to traffic operations and safety initiatives
Education and Experience
- Three (3) year post-secondary diploma in Transportation Engineering Technology
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in traffic operations (signs and markings, traffic safety, signals etc.) preferably in a municipal environment
- Full membership and registration with Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or ability to obtain certification
- Knowledge of Traffic Engineering Software (TES), Synchro, AutoCAD, Miovision
- A good understanding of municipal traffic operation principles, engineering standards, field-related resource materials such as the Geometric Road Design Guide (TAC), Ontario Traffic Manuals, Highway Traffic Act
- Ability to work independently and within a team in a fast paced environment and to meet multiple deadlines
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of GIS is preferred
Salary Range: $70,719 – 88,400 (based on 35 hrs/week)
