Description
Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Superintendent,  the Parks Labourer is responsible for a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled, parks, gardens and trails work, tasks and duties.  These duties are generally physical in nature and require the use of simple tools and equipment. This position works a flexible work week including weekends and evenings. 

CORE COMPETENCIES

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

·Assists other personnel in carrying out duties.

·Operates equipment including, but not limited to, chain saws, weed eaters, push & riding lawn mowers, light trucks, jackhammers, cut-off saws and compactors.

·Performs routine tasks including, but not limited to:

·Cleans and clears brush, culverts and ditches.

·Weeding and grass cutting.

·Construction and/or maintenance of District garden beds.

·Construction and/or maintenance of District trails and parks.

·Refuse and litter pickup. 

·Sweeping and cleaning of washrooms in a relief capacity to Public Works. 

·Painting buildings, signs and structures.

·Unloading and moving of supplies.

·Hand excavations and backfilling.

·Assists in the maintenance and installation and/or repair of various municipal park infrastructure.

·Follows all safety procedures.

·Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

kKNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

·Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with other employees, supervisors and the general public.

·Must be physically capable of carrying out assigned duties in all weather conditions.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

·High schoOl diploma or a combination of education and experience.

·Possession of a valid B.C. Drivers License Class 5.

Salary & Benefits

This is a temporary position based on 40 hours per week with a term starting on May 29, 2023 and ending on July 31, 2023, with the possibility of extension. The hourly wage for this position is $27.98, plus an additional 15.2% in lieu of benefits, vacation and statutory holidays. This position is subject to a probationary period during which time the wage will be $26.08. This is a union position and is subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between CUPE Local 118 and the District of Tofino.
