We are looking for a Deputy Fire Chief to join our team that has a passion for serving their community! This role responsible for assisting with the leadership and coordination of the Fire Department.
Reporting to the Regional Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief plays an integral role in the operations of the Fire Department and the various regional Fire Halls.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the preparation and development of firefighting plans and procedures and departmental policies; track trends and anticipate issues that may impact emergency services and prepare policy and recommendations for Senior Management and Town Council.
- Work collaboratively with other municipal staff in Slave Lake and MD 124 and build partnerships with other municipal partners and provincial agencies to advance the interests of effective fire services for the area.
- Provide direction to the volunteers regarding the Fire Prevention Inspection Program, Code Enforcement, Public Fire Education Program requiring regular reports and adherence to accepted Professional guidelines and standards; provide these services in conjunction with the Captains and Training Officers.
- Conduct all investigations as mandated by the Quality Management Program in accordance with applicable legislation on the fires that result in dollar loss, injury, or death of anyone within the corporate boundaries of the Town of Slave Lake and MD 124, train staff in investigation.
- As part of a regional training centre for northern Alberta provide direction, development, and delivery of regional and local emergency training to Firefighters and outside organizations.
- Promote fire prevention in the region through inspections, public appearances, and public information education programs.
- Coordinate, schedule, direct and personally carry out training of personnel in the methods of firefighting, rescue, medical and the use of equipment for emergency response.
- Oversee the general upkeep and orderliness of the fire station and the maintenance and operation of all emergency equipment and apparatus.
- Consult with supervisors regarding approval of fire service policy/direction/priorities and interpretation of Town of Slave Lake policies/procedures.
- Assist in the administration of the Disaster Services program including training, mock disasters, and maintenance of Municipal Emergency Plan.
- Other related work and projects as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- Extensive use of computer and telephone.
- Long periods of sitting, good lighting, temperature, and noise control.
- Minimal physical effort; occasional light lifting.
- Required to attend and investigate emergency response sites with unsettling images and content.
- Subject to working in outdoor environment.
- Use and operation of a vehicle.
Normal working day consists of 8.0 hours; however, overtime may be required.

- Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced
- Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Town Policies and all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum five years’ experience in a position of responsibility and leadership in the Fire Service, preferably with a recognized municipal fire service.
- Working knowledge of:

- Municipal Government Act
- Grade 12 graduate (preference may be given for post-secondary education in Administration or Fire Sciences).
- NFPA 1001 Level II;
- NFPA 1072 (Operations);
- NFPA standard 1041 Level II;
- Safety Codes Officers (Fire) Group B2 and Group C2;
- NFPA 1031 Level II;
- NFPA 1033 Level II;
- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officers;
- Advanced First Aid or better;
- Basic Emergency Preparedness;
- Alberta Emergency Alert;
- ICS 300;
- ICS 100/200 Instructor;
- Flag Person Trainer;
- Possess a valid Class 3, 4 Driver’s License with “Q” endorsement.
