The successful applicant will report to the Curator and be an integral part of the Collections Team. They will assist the Team with heritage-related projects. Work includes assisting with exhibits, research and writing, events, care of artifacts, and gardening. The position is based at the Grande Prairie Museum, but the successful applicant will also be working at the Rev. Forbes Homestead and Ernie Radbourne Pavilion.
Responsibilities
As the Heritage Attendant, you are a temporary full-time summer student worker based on a 35-hour work week. Your regular week is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 p.m., but some holiday and weekend work can be expected.
You will work alongside a team of three others to ensure our exhibits and historical houses are in good shape, presentable and accurate. You also assist with guided tours and special events which can include set-up and take-down. We have several heritage gardens and lawns at our sites that will need care so there is a healthy mix of indoor and outdoor work. You will have the opportunity to conduct historical research and there is room to coordinate the research to both the needs of the museum and the student's interests.
You will be taught how to handle museum artifacts and will have access to the Museum's collections for various projects. You will be expected to assist with the daily operation and preservation of our two historic sites.
You Bring
This position is ideal for someone interested in local history and eager to take part in creative projects. Interest in carpentry and general handy work is an asset, but also artistic creativity and innovation. Qualifications include a valid class 5 driver's license, a minimum of one year of post-secondary education, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. A current CPR and AED certificate is an asset.
