Position Summary
Reporting to the Supervisory staff in Parks Infrastructure, Horticulture, Urban Forestry, Water, Roads, and the Energy and Waste sections. Summer Students will be responsible for the daily maintenance activities throughout the City.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Parks:
• Ground maintenance: including mowing, trimming activities, and lining of sports fields
• Horticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
• Urban Forestry maintenance, data management and collection
• Waste/Recycling collection and litter picking within the parks system
• Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and general construction
• Providing support for special events including delivery, set up, takedown and clean-up
• Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, occasional operation of a vehicle
• Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
• Other duties as assigned
Roads/Water:
• General road maintenance and inspection (e.g. catch basins, manholes, boulevards, potholes, signs)
• Traffic control and vehicle/pedestrian orientation
• Stop bar and crosswalk line painting
• Work order entries and data collection
• Cleaning and maintenance of trucks/inventory/yard
• Parts and Materials delivery Painting fire hydrants
• Preliminary field work and site inspections (e.g. water valves, manholes, chambers)
• Site restoration (sodding and topsoil)
Education and Experience
- Be currently enrolled in a college or university as a full-time student and returning to school full time for the fall semester
Required Skills/Knowledge
• Previous experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an asset
• Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
• Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
• Must possess Green Patch CSA approved 6” to 8" safety boots
• Be able to work outdoors during all weather conditions and available to work shifts and/or weekends including holidays from May - September 2022
• Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License
• Upon employment you must provide a current satisfactory drivers abstract
