The Paid-On-Call (POC) Firefighters (commonly known as Volunteer Fire Fighters) are members of our team who play a key role in the delivery of fire service support to The City of Whitehorse. Responsibilities include scene support assignments responding to fires, rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents and other incidents where risks are posed to life and property as well as participating in fire prevention activities.
Our POC firefighters are trained to nationally recognized standards. The requirement to operate at an emergency scene requires that our POC Firefighters are well trained to perform their duties. Training will be provided.
Working Conditions:
Be able to commit to a minimum of 50 hours per month of "on call" availability. Exposure to health hazards, smoke/fumes, chemicals, temperature extremes and noise in firefighting and emergency situations.
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Successfully meet the departments technical, physical and medical requirements
- Hold a valid Yukon Class 5 Driver's License, with willingness to achieve a Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement
- Produce a favourable Driver's Abstract (no more than 6 demerit points)
- Produce a favourable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screen
- Able to legally work in Canada
- Able to attend 50% of training sessions (Tuesday evenings) unless excused
- Be able to commit to a minimum of 50 hours per month of "on-call" availability
- Have support from your employer to be releasable during normal working hours
- Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to following orders
- Ability to work day or night under stressful situations
- Work effectively independently or in a team environment
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Examples of Equipment to Operate:
Fire apparatus, fire rescue and related equipment including but not limited to: pumper, tanker, rescue vehicle, automobile extraction tools, wildland firefighter and technical rescue equipment. General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to work processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail etc.
$23.19 per hour
