Reporting to the General Manager of Community Services, the Director of Recreation and Social Programs is accountable for and oversees the strategic direction and operational management of the Business Unit (BU). As the Director you will lead and drive programs and services to increase social inclusion and customer satisfaction for Calgarians seeking physical and cultural activities.
In addition, you will develop project approaches, strategies and outcomes within the Recreation and Social Programs business unit and other corporate business units to ensure alignment with corporate, departmental, and public expectations. Primary duties include:

Drive programs and services to increase social inclusion and customer satisfaction for Calgarians seeking social and physical activities and/or facing vulnerabilities.

Drive the programming of Calgary’s recreation landscape through sector best practice.

Advance opportunities and oversight of strategic initiatives for citizens to participate in a variety of recreation, sport, leisure, creative, and social activities through programs, drop-in activities, rentals and bookings at City facilities (excluding golf).

Support the programming of The City's recreation and leisure complexes while maximizing cost recovery mechanisms and achieving customer service outcomes.

Oversee the delivery of the Fair Entry and Transit Access Eligibility programs that help Calgarians facing vulnerabilities access City services.

Support programming targeted at youth including Youth Employment Centre and City Hall School.

Support the community development approach of the Community Social Work program.

Partner with Infrastructure Services and Operations Services on the planning, delivery and maintenance of the assets required for programming.

Liaise with Partnerships BU on delivery of recreation services provided by Partner operated facilities and Transit on eligibility assessments.

A degree in a related field, with at least 10 years of progressively responsible management experience in a complex organization.

Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.

A Master’s degree in a related field will be considered an asset.

A successful track record in building and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders including internal business units, elected officials, businesses and citizens, the community and all orders of government is essential.

Demonstrated ability as a strategic communicator with strong political acumen is required.

Experience and success in creating and executing a strategic vision and direction for a complex organization, ideally in a service-based environment is a preferred asset.

Public sector experience, particularly municipal government experience in a large, multi-union environment, is a preferred asset.

$155,500 - $240,000 per annum
