To be eligible for a summer student position with the City of Oshawa you must be currently enrolled in full-time studies at community college or university and returning to full-time studies in the fall. Documentation from the school must be provided indicating your intention to return to school at the end of the summer break in the current year. If this documentation is not received, you will be disqualified from the student employment program and will not be considered for future student employment opportunities.

Student labourers are an important component of the Road Operations workforce and are key to the successful delivery of Traffic programs. Students must commit to a full term of employment up to and including Sept 03, 2021. Student performance will be evaluated during the work term. Students employed in previous summers must reapply. Previous applicants or incumbents are not guaranteed an interview or employment from year to year. Certain positions may require a satisfactory verification of a candidate’s Record of Criminal Offences as a condition of employment. Applications will be reviewed and successful candidates are placed in a lottery. Those selected will proceed through the interview process.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Traffic Field Operations, and under the general direction of the Supervisor and/or designate, perform various labouring duties in Road Operations, Community Services Department.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform various labouring activities, including but not limited to:
• Digging in or pounding in traffic posts. Setting up and maintaining traffic counter equipment.
• Operation and maintenance of ramset fastener.
• Operation and maintenance of traffic line grinder and paint machines.
• Operation and maintenance of power tools or equipment such as hammer drill, cordless drill and table saw.
• Intermediate computer skills and operation.
• Repair and maintenance of various traffic structures such as posts, curbs and signage.
• Perform sign inspections and retro reflectivity measurements.
• Pruning of trees and material that cause sight obstructions to traffic signs.
• Perform maintenance functions including sweeping, polishing, washing and general repairs such as painting and carpentry.
• Complete appropriate work records and related paper work such as time sheets and event/activity schedules.
• Notify supervisor of maintenance and safety requirements and vandalism.
• Work in accordance with the City of Oshawa’s Safe Work Standards and the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act. Maintain good public relations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Preference will be given to students who are currently attending school and have previous work experience in municipal traffic or construction or property maintenance related industry.
• Intermediate reading, writing and oral English skills. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions concerning routine or unique work assignments.
• Intermediate computer skills and the ability to complete forms and records relevant to the job.
• Good interpersonal skills; common sense and courtesy to deal with the general public and to communicate with colleagues. Neat in appearance and work habits.
• Must be able to work within a group and also independently with minimal supervision.
• Physically fit and able to perform strenuous work such as climbing, lifting and moving heavy items (80 lbs./approx. 36 kgs.), involving considerable effort, and capable of performing the work assigned in a safe manner.
• Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS).
• Willing and capable of training on required equipment specific to the position, e.g. Pickup trucks and light duty vehicles.
• Able to work weekends and holidays as required based on operational requirements.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Ontario Driver's Licence, minimum Class "G", in good standing, and able to pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation.
