Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the operation and general maintenance of equipment at all waste water treatment plants and collection facilities. Work involves performing difficult technical and skilled work in the design, set up, calibration, repair and maintenance of instrumentation and instrument control equipment. Incumbent must exercise judgment based on training and experience in making decisions and coordinating the proper operation of equipment. Incumbent must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness when in contact with customers and the general public. Journeyperson may be assigned helpers or apprentices as required.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Installs, troubleshoots and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, automated, and electrical/electronic equipment including but not limited to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), low voltage power supplies, gages, flow meters, gas detection, online analyzers and test equipment.
- Conducts corrective and preventative maintenance on process equipment, programming for PLCs, platforms, field smart instrumentation, and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
- Test various instrumentation and control devices for applicability to newly constructed facilities and replacement of obsolete instrumentation.
- Inspects, calibrates, maintains and repairs electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instrumentation and control devices utilized in water production, treatment and distribution systems such as chart recorders, strip charts, turbidimeters and chemical feed controllers.
- Maintains, calibrates and repairs S.C.A.D.A. (Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition) programs and PLCs.
- Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions in complex and sophisticated electronic circuitry that includes integrated circuits, micro circuits, transistors and telemetry systems; analyzes problems in instrumentation circuitry, makes necessary repairs and designs systems modifications.
- Operates test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, frequency meters, signal generators, audio frequency generators, tone generators, mercury manometers, and interprets readings.
- Designs, fabricates and installs new instrumentation systems; reads and interprets various blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
- Maintains, calibrates and repairs a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment such as pH meters, conductivity meters, colorimeters, and various chemical analyzers.
- Maintains equipment and calibration history logs, work order requests, testing results; prepares a variety of reports as necessary.
- Train operators and maintenance personnel in better understanding of SCADA and process control systems and maintenance.
- Perform other related duties as required
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Alberta Journeyperson in Instrumentation Mechanics or Red Seal required.
- Three (3) years related experience in electronics/instrumentation repair and maintenance and digital electronics or ladder logic programming; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
You will possess the following:
- A valid Alberta Class Five (5) driver’s licence is required (clear driving abstract is an asset).
- Knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing PLCs.
- Comprehension of schematics, blue prints, and P&ID drawings.
- Experienced with maintenance, set-up, and calibration of all types of process instrumentation.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of a Microsoft Suite software.
- Must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of this position on an ongoing basis.
- Must be willing to work in all weather conditions (immunizations strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions).
