Job Summary - Skilled Labourer (Summer) /Truck Driver (Winter) - Transportation - Job Opening 20042


Work varies from general and skilled labour to bridge repair, tree work (stump removal, chipping, planting, brush clearing), heavy equipment operation and truck/snow plow driving, including operating Regional vehicles and equipment.

Pay rate The current starting rate for this position is $23.36 (summer) and $26.91 (winter) and the pay range is $23.36-$24.66 (summer) and $26.51-$28.03 (winter).

Hours: A typical work week is scheduled 40 hours.

Shifts vary and are subject to overtime Skilled Labourers work is typically scheduled Monday-Friday days and Truck Driver work includes shifts up to 12 hours, scheduled days, nights, weekends & holidays.

Location: Our patrol yards are located in Welland, Thorold, Pelham and Smithville.

Employees may be assigned to any location, and may work at one location in the winter and another in the summer.


Duties Employees perform a wide variety of tasks, including:

  • Maintaining or repairing asphalt and concrete roads/surfaces, curbs, boulevards, etc.
     
  • Operating trucks and snow plows, over 11,000 kg. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), including special attachments
  • Applying sand and/or salt to road surfaces
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing ditches, culverts, storm sewers, guide posts/cables/rails, delineators, and signs
  • Repairing and maintaining bridges and culverts
  • Planting, trimming, and removing trees or brush, as well as mowing grass and weeds
  • Collecting and disposing of road debris (including road kills)
  • Acting as a traffic control person
  • Plowing snow from road surface and winging back snow banks on shoulders or roadsides
  • Installing or removing snow fence
  • Hauling snow, debris, soil, or brush, etc.to approved disposal sites
  • Loading, hauling and spreading bituminous, aggregate or other construction materials
  • Operating various pieces of equipment, including mower, grader, loader/backhoe, brush chipper, asphalt roller, hand tools and power tools, including special attachments
  • Performing other duties such as paperwork, housekeeping, and various road maintenance activities
  • Operating Regional vehicles and equipment
  • Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with regulations and procedure

Shift Information

This position is subject to overtime, 12-hour shifts and shift rotation, including days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.

Please note this is a seasonal-split position. The job duties and salary range for the summer and winter seasonal portions of this position are outlined below. The position may be located at any of our patrol yards, and the location may be different in the winter and summer. Our patrol yards are currently located in Welland, Thorold, Pelham and Smithville.

Requirements

Education

Completion of a high school diploma, or equivalency (Ex. GED)

  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted class DZ and G driver's license
  • Additional levels of training, education and certifications related to the job (asset)
  • Chainsaw and brush chipper training/certification (asset)
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid (asset)
  • W.H.M.I.S. training (asset)
  • Loader training/certification and/or experience (asset)
  • Additional health & safety training related to the position (asset

Knowledge

  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years in a similar environment
  • Previous experience operating trucks and snow plows (+11,000 kg GVW), graders, asphalt rollers, mowers, etc.
  • Must possess basic mechanical, and hydraulic knowledge and skills to operate the above mentioned equipment
  • Must possess a mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic tools and equipment related to road maintenance activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper health and safety practices
  • Familiarity with a Computerized Maintenance Management System/work order system (asset)
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM), Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Training/Certification in Materials Handling and/or Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Special Requirements

  • Must possess valid, unrestricted G and DZ class driver's licenses It is the employee's responsibility to possess and maintain a valid and restriction-free driver's license of appropriate class to carry out the duties of the job

  • Work location may be changed in order to better facilitate training and experience i.e. scheduled move from Location A to Location B
