Reporting to the Manager, Recreation Programming, the General Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Sackville Sports Stadium. The GM must achieve outcomes in key result areas including business planning, operational excellence, program and service leadership, client and community engagement, fiscal accountability and human resource management and safety and risk management. The GM will facilitate success in these key result areas through collaborative relationships, superior leadership and effective communication to employees and community volunteers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership to a talented team of employees and volunteers dedicated to the management and delivery of a variety of sport and recreation programs and services;
- Establish and implement policies and procedures to ensure overall efficiencies and ensure such procedures align with HRM policies and procedures;
- Prepare business and strategic plans, both short and long term, to ensure the facility has a strategic vision that is financially stable and meets the growing trends in community and sports programming.
- Ensure that services are provided in the most efficient and effective way including, analysing alternative service delivery methods, trend analysis and policy development;
- Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with key community groups, Sport Nova Scotia, HRM business units, and other government agencies to understand the desires of the community, and to maximize the development and usage of the facility and delivery of programs;
- Prepare, manage and recommend annual operating (expenditures and revenue of approximately $3 million) and capital budgets for approval;
- Negotiate, oversee and manage contracts within the facility, following HRM guidelines and policies;
- Develop new revenue opportunities and cost saving measures to sustain the immediate and long term responsibility of full cost recovery of the facility;
- Oversee the management of the facility, maximizing use of all spaces within the facility and balancing the needs of a diverse group of clients;
- Responsible for implementing and complying with HRM Corporate Occupational Health & Safety policies, Business Unit (BU) specific safety policies, the NS Occupational Health & Safety Act and the safety regulations applicable to the work activity.
- Provide leadership for the implementation of the Hub and Spoke model in consultation with Sackville/Bedford Recreation Unit.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Must have a post-secondary Degree in Recreation, Sport Administration or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must have a minimum of five years of sport or recreation facility management experience.
- Must have demonstrated financial management and business acumen skills.
- Must have demonstrated progressive leadership skills and experience managing employees.
- Must have experience in developing business plans.
- Must have demonstrated capabilities in project management.
- Must have experience in preparing and making presentations.
- Must be able to successfully complete a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Must have sound knowledge and insight of sport, recreation and wellness; strong knowledge of facility management principles; working knowledge of appropriate legislation related to operating a major facility; strong knowledge of human resource principles and applicable legislation; sound knowledge of financial management principles; knowledge of project management practices; an understanding of market conditions, trends and opportunities.
- Must be able to function effectively in a computerized environment with a broad base of computer applications.

WORK STATUS: Three (3) year Term position
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday – 35 hours per week. Requirement to work flexible hours to attend evening meetings and be on call in case of emergency.
SALARY: M3 Level, Non Union Salary Range ($74,000-$105,000).
