The New Westminster Public Library serves a population of 68,000 in two branches. Our main branch is in the busy Uptown shopping district, and serves a very diverse and urban user group. Our Queensborough Branch is in a family neighbourhood, and is located in a busy community center.
The perfect candidate for this position is creative, forward-thinking, and understands the vital role that public libraries play in their communities. They have excellent communication skills and are looking for a working environment where they can be as engaged with other members of the Leadership Team, library staff and the library community as they are with Technology and Technical Services. They will understand the value of collaboration and working in a team environment, and are comfortable working in a state of constant change.
A member of our Exempt, 6-person Leadership Team, the Manager of Infrastructure and Technology reports to the Deputy Chief Librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for an overall staffing compliment of 7, with 3 direct reports. In addition to Library-wide responsibilities working with other members of the Leadership Team, this position has 2 major areas of responsibility; Technical Services and Acquisitions, and Public Technology.
Overview of Position Responsibilities:
- Overall management of staff in the Technical Services and Technology areas
- Directly supervising the Cataloging Librarian, the Technical Services Supervisor and the Technology Librarian II
- Ensures that the cataloging and classification of materials balance industry standards with the needs of library users
- With direct reports, oversees day-to-day operations of work areas and establishes annual work plans
- Management of Acquisitions for all library collections
- Management of vendor relationships and contracts related to technology and acquisitions
- Overall management of public-facing technology
- Liaises with City of New Westminster IT staff regarding technology troubleshooting and technology planning
- Makes recommendations to the Leadership Team regarding the need for emerging hardware, software and technology services for the public
- Coordination of library-wide staff training; responsible for the Library’s Professional Development budget
- Represents the Library on select City of New Westminster Committees, and on related committees in the library community.
Qualifications
- MLIS from an ALA accredited university
- 5 years of experience working in a public library setting, including a minimum of 2 years in an exempt leadership position
- Significant responsibility for managing professional and support staff in a unionized environment, including hiring, coaching and performance management
- Demonstrated experience in all areas of cataloging and managing Technical Services functions
- Management of an ILS; preference will be given to candidates who have worked with Horizon and BiblioCommons.
- Experience managing digital projects and services in a public library, including web applications.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and the ability to think creatively
- Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment, and to inspire staff with your vision and enthusiasm
