ENGINEERING INSPECTOR

Engineering Department

 

Position Overview: The Engineering Inspector position is responsible for prioritizing and conducting the day-to-day field oversight and inspection of Municipal infrastructure construction and renewal projects.  This position is responsible for ensuring that construction work is completed in compliance with Contract Drawings and Contract Documents; Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications; infrastructure policy and design guidelines; applicable City standards, policies, procedures and by-laws; and/or related legislation and regulations.  This position receives, investigates, and advises on the course of action to remedy issues arising from inquiries, requests and/or complaints related to infrastructure construction projects and/or renewal projects.  Overall, this position plays an integral role in ensuring that infrastructure construction activities are properly inspected to provide and maintain a level of quality that meets City standards and to extend the lifespan of the City’s infrastructure.

 

 

Requirements

Applicants must have:                                                                                          

Key Qualifications:

 

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or related discipline
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) Designation from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • Road Construction Senior Inspector (RCSI) endorsement from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Ontario is preferred.
  • Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC) from CISEC, Inc. and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is preferred.

                                   

Experience

  • Four (4) years of closely related experience (Eight (8) years is preferred) in the field inspection of civil infrastructure projects including road works, bridge construction, watermain construction, storm and sanitary construction, construction, including one (1) year of experience as an Assistant Contract Administrator (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting street lighting and traffic signal installations is preferred

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Working knowledge of the following legislation:  Occupational Health and Safety Act; Municipal Act; Highway Traffic Act
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • build and maintains courteous, effective and cooperative relationships with City Staff, contractors, developers, consultants, utility companies, the general public and other stakeholder
    • communicate effectively in written and verbal form
    • make sound decisions under tight timelines and high stress situations on construction sites
    • promote a high standard of public relations at all times
    • Demonstrated ability to negotiate construction claims is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain proper documentation and work records
  • Computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word)
Salary & Benefits

The 2016 salary range is of $67,017.60 to $80,288 per year ($32.22/hr to $38.60/hr).  The hours of work will be 40 hours/week.  For full details regarding this position, please visit our website at www.barrie.ca.
