WATER DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR CLASS II

Environmental Services Department

 

 

The Water Distribution Operator Class II position is responsible for the maintenance of the Water Distribution System from the treatment facilities to the property line within the City of Barrie.  This position performs regular operational inspections and maintenance of distribution infrastructure and repairs distribution water mains and service breaks.  Additionally, this position commissions new water distribution infrastructure, which involves swabbing, pressure testing, super chlorination, continuity checks and regulated sampling.  Lastly, this position is responsible for new water meter installation and replacement, service flushes, internal service valve replacement, leak detection, high bill investigation, and the thawing of frozen services as well as assessing and responding to water quality concerns.  Overall, this position plays an integral role in the timely completion of maintenance activities related to the water distribution system in order to maintain compliance with drinking water acts and regulations, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and branch, departmental, and/or corporate policies and procedures.

 

Requirements

Applicants must have:                                                                                              

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Two (2) year College Diploma, Civil Engineering Technician or Environmental Engineering Technician.  A three (3) year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Environmental Engineering Technology is preferred.
  • Class II Certificate in Water Distribution and/or Class II Certificate in Water Distribution and Supply from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC).
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing.  Valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with a “Z” endorsement in good standing is preferred.
  • Water Meter Installer (800A) Certificate of Apprenticeship from the Ontario College of Trades, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is preferred.
  • Certified Cross Connection Control Specialist from the Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) is preferred.

 

Experience

  • Three (3) years (five years is preferred) of operating and maintenance experience in a Class II Water Distribution Subsystem and/or a Class II (or greater) Water Distribution and Supply Subsystem

 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Medical documentation to confirm medically fit to wear a respirator
  • Thorough working knowledge of all applicable legislation, including but not limited to the following, as it relates to a Class II Water Distribution subsystem and/or a Class IV Water Distribution and Supply subsystem:  Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002:  O. Reg. 169/03; O. Reg. 170/03; O. Reg. 128/04; Drinking Water Works Permits; Municipal Drinking Water Licences; Procedure for Disinfection of Drinking Water in Ontario; Ontario Drinking Water Quality Management Standards (DWQMS); Ontario Water Resources Act:  O. Reg. 225/14; Permit to Take Water; Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act; American Water Works Association (AWWA) Standards
  • Demonstrated ability to frequently lift objects over 10 kg
  • Demonstrated ability to read and create drawings and plans
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and communication (written and oral) skills
  • Computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), and the Internet
Salary & Benefits
