The County of Essex has an opening for this newly created dual role overseeing corporate communications and accessibility initiatives.

 

The successful candidate will develop and implement a corporate communications strategy that ensures the County’s brand and messaging are delivered throughout the Corporation in a consistent manner, using a variety of modalities. The successful candidate will also work with the various departments to ensure that operational needs are effectively communicated to the public and other affected parties in a timely manner.

 

The successful candidate will provide expertise and guidance on accessibility legislation and will develop policies and appropriate communications to a variety of stakeholders.

Requirements

University/College Degree/Diploma (3 year program minimum) in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or Marketing or a combination of education and experience in relevant disciplines which is deemed appropriate by the Corporation

•Minimum of three years of experience in a communications, public relations or other related role

•Extensive knowledge of accessibility legislation (i.e. Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 other related regulations and the Ontario Human Rights Code)

•Knowledge of municipal government processes, particularly in the development and delivery of communications, customer service, and stakeholder consultation plans

•Working knowledge in print, graphic and web related mediums

•Exceptional written and oral communication/presentation skills, along with strong interpersonal and consultative skills

•Proven ability in exercising discretion in a confidential manner when advising Administration and County Council on sensitive public and labour relations issues.

•Proven ability to work independently, establish priorities, meet deadlines, work after hours as a resource to Council and Management, and at times may be called upon to assume the role as the County’s representative on certain issues

•Possess strong assessment, organizational and coordination skills together with strong team building skills

•Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, the public and the media •Demonstrated experience in project management

•Strong problem-solving, decision-making and time-management skills

•Advanced computer skills in Microsoft products (Microsoft Office Suite) and Adobe applications (Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, video editing software), particularly as they relate to implementation of accessible communications

•Strong understanding of and demonstrated experience with social networking tools, including knowledge of current social media best practices, research and analytical skills to monitor social media trends and produce reports

•Prior use of a Content Management Systems •Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 web design guidelines

•Must have the ability to travel to offsite locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful Driver’s License (G class) is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.

•Ability to work occasional over time.
