Key Responsibilities:
- On a daily basis, monitors and assesses current and emerging federal legislative, regulatory, policy and program initiatives related to areas of assigned responsibility that may impact FCM’s members
- On an ongoing basis, works with Policy Manager to expand policy team’s networks with municipal expert staff, government officials, external experts and stakeholders
- Undertakes secondary public policy research, identifies and manages external consultants to conduct primary research where required, and provides policy advice to senior management and National Board of Directors
- Manages policy team’s preparation of documentation (agendas, reports, briefing notes, presentations, etc.) for meetings of FCM’s National Board of Directors and standing committees
- Develops substantive, leading-edge policy analysis, recommendations, reports, and submissions to government, FCM management and Board of Directors
- Leads special research and outreach projects, including working horizontally across FCM, with outside partners, managing consultants, project budgets and work plans
- Monitors municipal initiatives, trends and issues that pertain to FCM policy areas of interest and builds networks of relevant municipal experts from across the country
- Master’s degree in political science, public administration, economics or public policy, or a combination of experience and education that would be considered equivalent
- Three to four years of experience in the area of public policy and administration with experience in conducting research and developing policy positions and recommendations in a political context
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a quickly changing, fast paced and multicultural environment
- Knowledge of and experience in one or more policy areas of intersecting municipal – federal responsibility.
Language Requirements:
- The ability to work fluently in French and in English (both written and spoken) is considered a strong asset.
