You will work on challenging legal issues for major City projects and will report to the Section Head, Solicitors Law Section. Working in one of the areas Expropriations or Procurement, key accountabilities include:
Expropriations:
• Provide legal advice and recommendations regarding land acquisition, expropriation, road and access closures
• Provide legal advice and recommendations on transportation planning matters
• Negotiate and mediate resolution of complex and adversarial matters and research and apply the law in divergent factual situations
• Gather facts through interviews and documents and draft legal agreements, documents and submissions
• Take a proactive role in providing recommendations to avoid risk/liability
• Represent the City and its employees in legal proceedings before the administrative tribunals, court and other public forums
Procurement:
• Providing solicitor support to the Materials Management Branch, which includes providing opinions, document review and drafting
• Providing legal advice and recommendations regarding the procurement of goods, services and construction
• Drafting and providing legal advice and recommendations regarding tender documents and agreements
• Providing legal advice and recommendations regarding procurement policies, practices and procedures
• Developing standard documents and templates and negotiating and mediating resolution of complex and adversarial matters
• Researching and applying the law in divergent factual situations and taking a proactive role in providing recommendations to avoid risk/ liability.

Qualifications:
• Membership with the Law Society of Alberta or the ability to attain membership with the Law Society of Alberta immediately upon appointment
• Minimum of 2 years experience practicing law with 1 of these years post articling experience
• Experience in land acquisition/real estate and commercial drafting is required
• Experience in municipal, administrative law, civil litigation, construction law, and procurement would be an asset
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints
• Excellent verbal, written communication skills, strong analytical, problem solving, decision making skills and negotiating experience
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment and strong legal research skills and computer literacy
Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week. Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program
Salary Range: 91M, Salary Grade: PS, $79,626 - $157,169 (Annually)
