ENHANCING POLITICAL ACUITY: FOSTERING POSITIVE CHANGE IN POLICY DEVELOPMENT & RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Organization:
Ontario Municipal Leadership Institute (OMLI)
Location:
WEBINAR 12PM -1:30PM (EST), Ontario, Canada
Start Date:
February 11, 2025
End Date:
February 11, 2025
Description
Political dynamics can be either constructive or destructive, depending on how it’s managed. When approached with transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration, it can strengthen the group’s efforts. Conversely, unchecked power struggles or hidden agendas can derail progress. Participants will deepen their understanding and practical application of the core skills that underpin Political Acuity. By the end of the session, participants will have gained insights into how political awareness can enhance their ability to drive positive changes through both policy development and relationship management.

In this session we explore:

  • Defining Political Acuity, and recognizing how politics plays a role in their work and community.
  • Help participants refocus their political radar to remain adaptable and resilient.
  • How emotional intelligence supports participants in effectively navigating and engaging with others across the political landscape.
  • The meaning of politics within their areas of responsibility and  introduce a broader definition of politics, including the use—and sometimes misuse—of power.
  • Understanding the variety of stakeholders and advocacy roles in seeking change, expectations, interests, and effective approaches to engagement.
  • Explore power mapping strategies (examining power relationships) and engagement tactics (what works best and why). We'll also discuss why our roles may need to adopt an advocacy role in support of our municipal interests.
  • The “PIN” strategy (Be Professional – Maintain Integrity – Remain Neutral), leveraging emotional intelligence to foster long-term relationships, developing strong communication skills, avoiding potential pitfalls (those gotcha moments), and understanding our role and the nature of how our organizations function.
