Description
The TAC Canadian Roundabout Design Guide (2017) provides information and guidance related to the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and safety of roundabouts in Canada. The guide was developed to help roundabout designers and decision makers provide consistency and guidance across the country. This seminar will provide an overview of the contents of the Guide, and how to use it in conjunction with the TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (GDG) and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC).

Presenters

Michael MacDonald, Senior Transportation Engineer, Harbourside Transportation Consultants – Dartmouth, NS
Michael has over 21 years of experience in transportation, traffic engineering and municipal design. He has managed various transportation projects on highway and interchange design, roundabout design, traffic signal design, traffic studies, traffic modeling and intersection modifications. Michael was the lead writer of the geometric design chapter of the TAC Canadian Roundabout Design Guide. He has presented numerous public consultation/information sessions to educate the public on the benefits of roundabouts and how to use them. Michael has served as a project manager, lead designer, Arcady modeler and peer reviewer on roundabout projects in Canada and the U.S. 

Mitchell Jacobson, Senior Transportation Engineer, Watt Consulting Group – Victoria, BC
Mitchell is passionate about multi-modal transportation issues and transportation safety. He has extensive roundabout design and operational expertise on geometric and traffic control elements for single and multi-lane roundabouts, and presenting to communities that are considering adopting roundabouts. Mitchell was a co-author on several chapters of the TAC Canadian Roundabout Design Guide, a leader in on-road cycling designs and fully protected bike lanes, and an instructor for TAC’s Accommodating Cycling Facilities seminar.

Michael Skene, Principal, Watt Consulting Group – Victoria, BC
Mike has over 35 years of experience in managing and designing transportation infrastructure in municipalities across Canada. He has built a reputation as an innovator and a pioneer in community-based transportation planning and traffic engineering. Mike introduced some of the first roundabouts in British Columbia as a traffic control alternative, and has experience in research and accommodation of visually impaired pedestrians at roundabouts. Mike led the development of the Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming, and Bikeway Traffic Control Guidelines for Canada. On behalf of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, he developed safety conscious planning principles that have been applied throughout the province and is an instructor for TAC’s Accommodating Cycling Facilities seminar.

Gene Chartier, Vice President, Paradigm Transportation Solutions Limited – Toronto, ON
Gene has over 26 years of private consulting and municipal government experience in transportation, civil engineering and urban planning. His work covers a broad range of fields, including traffic engineering, land use and transportation planning, road design, construction management, municipal engineering, and development review. Gene played a fundamental role in developing the TAC Canadian Roundabout Design Guide, the Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming, and the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Promoting Sustainable Transportation through Site Design. Gene was the lead instructor for the Ontario Good Roads Association Intersection Design Course for over 15 years.
