District Adds Electric Vehicles to Fleet, Replacing Aging Assets with a Cost-Effective Alternative

November 22, 2024

The District of Sooke is proud to announce the addition of two new electric vehicles (EV) to its municipal fleet, marking an important milestone in the district's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to EVs, Sooke is addressing the largest contributor to its carbon footprint transportation while embracing a cost-effective solution.

The new electric vehicle was purchased as part of the district's ongoing fleet replacement program, ensuring that vehicle upgrades align with the natural lifecycle of existing vehicles. Each year, the District evaluates its fleet to determine which vehicles are due for replacement, integrating sustainability into the decision-making process. The current EV acquisitions replace light-duty vehicles requiring replacement this year. In addition to the environmental benefits, investing in EVs reduces long-term operational costs, contributing to a more financially sustainable future for the District.

Currently, Sooke's fleet produces an estimated 95 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, with the majority of emissions coming from internal combustion engine vehicles. By replacing light-duty vehicles with electric models like the newly acquired EV, the District could cut fleet emissions by over 50% in the next 12 years, according to a recent emissions analysis.

"Transitioning to electric vehicles not only helps reduce our carbon footprint but is also a smart financial decision due to the lower long-term maintenance and energy costs compared to traditional vehicles," said Chief Administrative Officer Raechel Gray. "By investing in greener technologies and infrastructure, we are making strides toward a more sustainable future for Sooke."
