The City of Thunder Bay will introduce a new security measure requiring mandatory bag checks for all visitors attending City Council meetings, starting Monday, Feb. 10.
This measure is being implemented to align with evolving security practices across Canadian municipalities. The goal is to enhance safety for all involved, members of City Council, City staff and the public.
"This is a proactive step to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone attending Council meetings," said Krista Power, Director of Legislative Services & City Clerk. "We recognize the importance of public participation in local government, and this process is designed to balance security needs while keeping meetings accessible. Signage and notifications will be in place to ensure the public is well-informed about the new process."
The bag check process will be managed by Apex Security, the City's security provider. Security personnel will conduct visual inspections of bags, including purses, backpacks and briefcases, at the City Hall entrance before attendees proceed to Council Chambers.
Those who do not wish to participate in the bag check can watch meetings live via the City's website, Rogers TV or Tbaytel channels.
As safety expectations for public spaces are evolving, future assessments may lead to additional updates. This work is being managed by the City's Safety and Wellness Division.
