City of Greater Sudbury Announces New Executive Leaders and Revised Organizational Structure

The City of Greater Sudbury announced the appointment of three new General Managers on June 20, following a national search led by Odgers Canada. These executive leadership positions report directly to Chief Administrative Officer, Shari Lichterman.

Kris Longston has been promoted to General Manager, Planning and Growth. Mr. Longston has worked in the municipal sector for more than 23 years 16 of those with the City of Greater Sudbury, most recently as Director of Planning Services. In that role, he has led several initiatives in support of Council's Strategic Plan, including the City's Housing Supply Strategy, Climate Action Plan, Employment Land Strategy and Future Ready Development Services Committee implementation. Mr. Longston starts his new role on July 7.

Tyler Campbell has been promoted to General Manager, Community Well-being. Mr. Campbell has been with the City since 2011 where he has held various roles, including Manager of Children Services, Director of Leisure Services and, most recently, Director of Children and Social Services. Throughout his career at the City he has had the opportunity to lead several large-scale projects, including the divestiture of the City's child care centre, the creation of the Lotus program in partnership with Health Sciences North and the local rollout of the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care program. He was recently elected to the board of directors for the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA). Mr. Campbell starts his new role on July 7.

Antti Vilkko will join the City on July 28 as General Manager, Community Infrastructure. Mr. Vilkko is a strategic and collaborative leader with a diverse engineering management background, including more than 25 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Following 18 years in the private sector serving in multiple capacities and leading complex energy, linear and facility infrastructure projects, he joined the City of Guelph in 2016 to manage the Engineering Linear Infrastructure Design and Construction program. For the last seven years, Mr. Vilkko has been General Manager of the Facilities and Energy Management Department, responsible for leading the Facility Design and Construction, Corporate Building Maintenance, and Energy and Climate Change divisions for the City of Guelph.

With recruitment complete for these three key positions, Lichterman also announced updates to the City's organizational structure, revising the previously announced reorganization to consolidate two divisions and eliminate three existing director roles. This revision provides overall cost savings to the City's operating budget, even with the separation of the Fire Chief and Paramedic Chief roles. It also creates a new department Community Services to ensure each portfolio has strong executive leadership and is focused on efficient service delivery. The new organizational structure can be found here and will take effect July 7.
