Charlottetown City Council has appointed Police Chief Brad MacConnell as its new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), effective June 16, 2025.
"We're thrilled to name Brad as our new CAO," said Mayor Philip Brown. "Having someone who has been in a key leadership role within our City who already understands the inner workings of our community ensures we have a strong, steady hand guiding us as we continue to build a city that's responsive, resilient and ready for the future."
MacConnell has been Charlottetown's Chief of Police since 2021 and a member of the Charlottetown Police Services for 30 years. As Chief, he oversees a force of 100 members and a budget of $17 million annually, and is connected to all services and sectors in the capital city region. MacConnell has demonstrated a proven ability to work with other municipalities and the province on files beyond public safety, including housing, transportation, mental health and addictions, and justice.
"It's always a good sign when you can find a great candidate from within," said Councillor Norman Beck, Chair of the Human Resources Committee. "Over the years, Brad has proven time and again that he has the best interests of this City and its residents at heart, and we're really looking forward to working with him in this new capacity."
"I'm honoured by the trust Council has placed in me in taking on this new challenge," said MacConnell. "Having worked alongside so many dedicated people over the years, I know first-hand the passion and dedication that drive this organization. This City means a great deal to me and I look forward to continuing to serving it in this new role."
The CAO oversees the City's financial, human and physical resources, administering a team of 484 people, 250 of whom are full-time, and sets priorities for all departments and divisions to ensure alignment with Council's goals.
