Our Next Finance Minister ...Ready for It?
By Gord Hume

November 12, 2024

While it seems unlikely, I would like to make a nomination for our next Finance Minister: Taylor Swift.

Why?

One reason: She is a money-machine.

Her current Eras Tour has surpassed the one-billion-dollar mark—the first tour in show business history to ever achieve that.

The film of her tour surpassed the quarter of a billion-dollar level.

Her imminent arrival in Toronto has the city agog. A street has been named in her honor. There are so many events, ranging from scavenger hunts to people flying in from around the globe, that weddings are being postponed because of traffic concerns and the inability to get sufficient hotel bookings.

The cost of hotel rooms during her time in Toronto, by the way, has skyrocketed.

Destination Toronto is estimating the economic impact of her tour will be $282 million. The largest chunk of that will come from out-of-town visitors.

She will fill the Rogers Centre six times with 40,000 panting fans each evening. There will be a pre-concert event at the Metro Convention Centre that is expected to attract another 60,000 visitors.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Swift (probably just a mix-up by her secretary), but I fully admire how she has grown her art, image and business from her early days of playing in tiny bars. She has been smart enough to keep control of her music and management. She is a spectacular success in the entertainment universe.

So, back to my opening. Name me any Finance Minister in Canada who has produced the kind of revenue generation in a week that Taylor is going to? A Finance Minister—and let's throw in the 13 provincial and territorial ones, just for more fun—who has put the personal skin in the game that Taylor did?

Canada needs more innovation, more fresh business ideas, more achievements that become global successes.

I vote for Taylor. We could give her a nice office in Ottawa. Access to all the maple syrup and beaver tails she would like. We could arrange to fly in Travis whenever he's not playing in the NFL.

Ah, dreams, dreams.

Enjoy Canada, Ms. Swift.

What a lovely challenge Finance Minister would be.
