Join Our Team as an (MW) Jr GIS Specialist

Temporary 18 Month Term, Full Time

 

Are you passionate about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and looking to make a meaningful impact in your community? The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a talented Junior GIS Analyst to join our Municipal Works Engineering team. This role is vital in supporting the department by implementing GIS solutions that optimize business processes and guide decision-making. Join our team and play a crucial role in maintaining and disseminating data, preparing maps, and updating infrastructure inventory and asset information.

 

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Create, compile, and manipulate mapped spatial (GIS) data using a local area network computer workstation, providing output for Municipal Works infrastructure.
  • Utilize GIS, AutoCAD, and database software to access, edit, maintain, and input information, and to develop applications for asset management and infrastructure inventory.
  • Create, revise, and manage infrastructure databases, inventory, and as-built drawings, converting spatial data to different formats as needed.
  • Prepare maps and plans related to Municipal Works infrastructure for department staff.
  • Collaborate with department staff to implement effective GIS solutions for asset planning and forecasting.
  • Collect and process data using various forms of survey equipment.
  • Offer support and training to field personnel and department staff on the use of field computers, GIS software, database applications, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ensure clear and prompt communication by following appropriate systems and protocols for sharing information.
  • Represent yourself and the organization positively in all interactions.

 

What You Bring:

  • Intermediate proficiency in ESRI software suite (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, FME, Python, ArcSDE, and Field Maps) and Microsoft Office products.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, survey, and GPS equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and internal stakeholders.
  • Work independently, follow directions, and collaborate effectively with the team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently.
  • Familiarity with Cityworks software and utility networking considered an asset.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in GIS, Computer Science, or Information Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience, including experience with parcel/infrastructure information systems, GIS databases, and ESRI ArcGIS desktop software. Municipal and/or utility environment experience is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • An equivalent combination of management approved training and education may be considered.
