About You / What We Are Looking For

Merge your building and construction knowledge with customer service and bring your passion, training and experience to this exciting opportunity. As one of the fastest growing communities in British Columbia we are looking for highly motivated and committed urban planning professional to join the City’s growing Planning and Development department.

As a member of the Building Permits Division Team, you will examine plans and permit applications relating to multi-family, commercial, institutional or industrial building permits for compliance with the BC Building Code and By-laws. Using a considerable degree of independent judgement, you will: discuss proposed projects with architects, contractors, engineers and other interested parties; interpret/explain building and bylaw requirements; make suggestions and discuss possibilities for revising plans to conform to requirements; coordinate the work of the plan review function with other City departments; and assist the Plans Reviewer team.

Qualifications

Along with education from an Institute of Technology with a certificate (and, preferably, a diploma) in Building Technology, plus considerable related experience in the building construction industry, architectural / engineering field. Experience in a municipal office, preferably as a Plans Reviewer, is an asset.

You also have sound knowledge of:  BC Building Codes, building and zoning bylaws; the ability to interpret and apply BC Building Code, Bylaws, and regulations. Possession of a BOABC Level 3 qualification and/or certification as required in the Building Act. You possess excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills as well as exceptional customer service.  A valid BC Driver’s License is required.

Experience with AMANDA is an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience will also be considered.

What We Offer:

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $44.20 - $52.20 (2024 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options that may be available. The City offers an attractive vacation and extended benefits package, including the ability to contribute to the Municipal Pension Plan.
