Description
Reporting to the FireSmart Canada Program Manager, the FireSmart Canada Technical Coordinator (the Coordinator) acts as the FireSmart Canada technical subject matter expert within the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), supporting Canadian wildfire agencies and their partners. Utilizing their knowledge of FireSmart guidelines, wildland fire behaviour and structural fire impacts, the Coordinator will aid in enhancing the FireSmart program by answering queries, managing related projects, developing tools, engaging with research, and supporting various programming needs. Due to significant domestic and international partnerships, travel will be required. The Coordinator is expected to be able to accept and assume responsibility, interpret, and make decisions in accordance with the best practices and established procedures/policies of the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Respond to FireSmart Canada and community wildfire mitigation related queries
  • Support FireSmart Canada program implementation with clear and proven guidelines
  • Position FireSmart Canada as the go-to source for wildland fire prevention and mitigation information and guidelines among key industry sectors
  • Support FireSmart home and neighbourhood hazard assessment programs through technical guidance and ongoing review
  • Represent CIFFC at wildland urban interface code and standards task team meetings as well as on other relevant committees
  • Provide leadership to the FireSmart Canada Technical Working Group, ensuring role clarity and engagement
  • Lead or support initiatives focused on building practical assessment tools for landscape, structural and critical infrastructure
  • Represent CIFFC on post-fire research and analysis investigations
  • Represent CIFFC as a presenter and/or exhibitor at relevant conferences or workshops
  • Support CIFFC in initiatives for healthy and resilient forests, as required
  • Manage the CIFFC prevention and mitigation specific research plan
  • May be required to support the CIFFC Fire Centre operations at times of elevated wildland fire activity
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • University Degree, Diploma and/or postgraduate qualification in wildfire, natural resources or forest management; or in fire engineering, safety or prevention technology; or related subjects (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Experience in wildfire management, structural fire, or wildland fire prevention and mitigation, with fire inspections or investigations considered an asset
  • Minimum 2 years experience in leading, coordinating or supporting technical aspects of larger public projects focused on building strong technical foundations for future communication
  • Minimum 2 years experience in coordinating task teams, developing effective partnerships and networks
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate - professional, respectful, and curious
  • Strong technical foundation in building/construction science, research or familiarity with the industry
  • Familiarity with building by-law and code development or municipal planning an asset
  • Experience in project management and/or process improvement initiatives an asset
  • Familiarity with Canada’s National Prevention and Mitigation efforts
  • An enthusiastic self-starter with a good sense of time-management
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate in Canada’s two official languages (English and French) an asset
